Evaluation des Einsatzes von Studierenden der Gesundheits- und Krankenpflege auf Lernstationen im fünften Semester - Pilotstudie (EvalGUK-LS)

Nurses have overall responsibility for the nursing process. Newly graduated nurses can feel overwhelmed by this responsibility, especially when starting their careers. The assignment on learning wards is intended to strengthen the nursing skills and prepare them for a successful career start. Learning wards are selected clinical wards where nursing students assume responsibility for the management, care and support of patients to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have learned during their theoretical training.

Term: 01.06.2025 — 31.05.2026

Evaluations of educational measures have a long tradition. As a training institution for healthcare professions, the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions Upper Austria is largely responsible for the quality of training. Evaluation studies document the quality, outcome and impact of educational measures. A review of the outcomes of educational measures, which in the context of nursing studies also includes professional practice, can lead to a qualitative improvement in training. Evaluation therefore serves to review the achievement of training objectives. Evaluation research relies on both standardized survey procedures and quantitative analysis methods as well as qualitative procedures to describe phenomena.

National and international studies indicate that nursing and interprofessional skills can be improved by deploying nursing students on training wards. In the Bachelor's degree course in Healthcare and Nursing, more learning stations are to be implemented as part of nursing training in the future.

The planned study consists of two sub-studies, one following the quantitative (pre-post design) and one following the qualitative research paradigms. In the quantitative study, data will be collected using The Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale© (35 items) in German. Qualitative data will be generated through guided interviews and qualitative written surveys. The aim of this pilot study is to test the methods and to collect initial outcomes of the students' use of learning stations.
