Kids explore superpowers in plants

Phytochemicals, also known as secondary plant metabolites, play an integral role in our daily lives, as evidenced by the colours, scents and flavours of plant-based foods. Not only do they protect plants, they also enrich our lives through their sensory properties and potential health benefits. The project 'Kids Explore Superpowers in Plants' introduces children and adolescents to these fascinating substances by combining scientific research with hands-on educational experiences. Our goal is to raise awareness of scientific work among pupils and to spark their interest in food as a research topic.

Dietetics Research and Development
Term: 29.04.2025 — 01.09.2027

Phytochemicals are bioactive compounds found in plants that either protect them from pests or attract pollinators. They are also important for human sensory perception and may offer health benefits. Despite their ubiquity, this potential is often overlooked, particularly among young people. This is precisely where the project comes in.

The project uses the everyday relevance of the topic to encourage young people to engage with science. It combines content from food technology, biology, biochemistry and dietetics with innovative teaching and learning formats. Workshops, experimental materials and pedagogically prepared content make scientific concepts accessible to those with little or no less scientific background. The regional focus on Upper Austria further strengthens identification with the topic. In this way, science becomes understandable, tangible and personally relevant.

Through collaboration between the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions Upper Austria, Business Upper Austria (Food Cluster) and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OÖ), alongside partners from food production such as MV Chili Manufaktur and Claudius KG, young people can gain hands-on experience of research, product development and production. By combining life and science, fears of contact are alleviated and it is demonstrated that nutrition is a relevant and promising area of research and a promising professional field.
