Ensuring the Sustainable Workplace Integration of Recruited Philippine Nursing Professionals into the Long-Term Care Sector of Upper Austria
International nursing professionals – including those from the Philippines – play an important role in maintaining high-quality long-term care in Austria. As a result, they are actively recruited for the long-term care sector in the province of Upper Austria. It is essential, however, that these professionals are not regarded just as a response to workforce shortages. Instead, sustainable integration – both within the workplace and in the broader community – as well as their long-term retention in Upper Austria must be ensured. Insufficient workplace integration can create significant uncertainty, affecting both international nursing professionals and their colleagues.
The research project explores the experiences, needs, and challenges related to the workplace integration of nursing professionals from the Philippines into the long-term care sector in Upper Austria. To achieve this, multiple perspectives are considered: those of the Filipino nurses, their colleagues, and the perspective of the management in long-term care facilities.
The perspectives of the Filipino nurses are gathered through semi-structured individual interviews. The views of colleagues and management staff are collected through semi-structured focus groups. The findings are then consolidated in a workshop. Participants from the interviews and focus groups collaboratively and participatively contribute to the development of a practice-oriented action guideline.
The aim of the research project is to identify and systematize supportive and challenging factors in workplace integration and to highlight opportunities for further development. The insights gained provide the participating organizations with a scientific basis to strengthen their existing integration processes in a targeted and future-oriented manner.
The project has been commissioned and financially supported by the Amt der Oö. Landesregierung, Abteilung Soziales, as well as by the Bundesministerium für Europa, Integration und Familie (Bundeskanzleramt, Abteilung II/2 Integrationskoordination).
The following long-term care institutions in Upper Austria participate in the project as partner organizations: Bezirksseniorenhaus Gramastetten, Bezirksalten- und Pflegeheim Haslach, Bezirksalten- und Pflegeheim Lembach, Sozialzentrum Kloster Nazareth Stadl-Paura, Haus St. Josef Gmunden.
