HLS-EU study shows comparatively less health literacy for Austria and points to the extraordinary challenge for the Austrian population to find their way around the healthcare. In order to avoid wrong ways in the health care of patients and to protect from waiting times, the project “Der gelungene Patientenkontakt” started in October 2018. As a part of this project initialized by the Amt der OÖ Landesregierung-Abteilung Gesundheit und der Oberösterreichischen Gebietskrankenkasse, a scientific research was carried out by the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions Upper Austria (Master Programme Management for Health Professionals) to recommendations for information material (including diversity), access to information, information needs and guidelines for health professionals.

A total of 104 out of 1791 studies were used to evaluate the study situation. In addition to the need for communication trainings for medical professionals, user-friendly, responsive, tailor-made information and for all faithful and science-based information were required. A gender-specific search behavior among Internet users was found out.

Digitized media formats offer advantages in language barriers. Problem areas, fields of action and measures were derived from the subject areas. The main problem areas apply to communication between patients and health staff, information search processes and the need for information. Health literacy as an important sphere of activity and diversity as a challenge were demonstrated.
